This past weekend, I along with fellow Bats Inc.-er Kevin witnessed two event that rendered our brains useless.

Event #1

SUICIDE


Martin Rev & Alan Vega, reunited for a free show @ South Street Seaport, Pier 17 in Manhattan. Actually the pier was directly across the East River from the place we saw the incomparable BOREDOMS BOADRUM show earlier in the month in Brooklyn. At any rate, similarly to BOREDOMS, Suicide's live show cannot be described in any way other than "insane". Here are some pictures and videos i took:

OKAY SO THAT WAS SUICIDE. AFTER A GOOD 2 HOURS SPENT IN THE 400 DEGREE SUBWAY STOPS OF NEW YORK, AND A WONDERFUL NIGHT SPENT SLEEPING ON THE TILE FLOOR OF THE NYU DORMS, WE PROCEEDED TO BROOKLYN FOR EVENT #2.

EVENT #2

SONIC YOUTH PERFORMING DAYDREAM NATION IN ITS ENTIRETY
MCCARREN PARK POOL, BROOKLYN

so this was one of the most fulfilling experiences i could ever imagine. THE SLITS opened for sonic youth, which i was pretty excited about seeing how they were one of the first and most awesome girl punk bands of the 70's. of course when i first heard The Slits were opening i was like" Wow that's kinda reversed, aren't they more legendary than sonic youth?" And then as soon as the show started my questions were answered when The Slits proceeded to play a 35 minute set of complete and udder mediocracy and embarrassment. Kevin had seen them before and warned me of their mediocracy, but i wasn't prepared. Having the singer's 15 year old daughter on lead guitar wasn't a good idea, and her ability to have her amp turned to like 2 and to stand completely still the entire set didn't help to add to the stage presence of four 50 year old women. I think it was when the singer said, "we're the slits and we started reggae punk, we started it all", that i stopped recording their set on the tape player.

Sonic Youth obviously played Daydream Nation perfectly, and nailed every blistering sound without flaw. The crowd blew my ass, with a mix of ultra-williamsburgers, new yawk hard heads and 900 photographers.
Anyway, i had never been to Mccarren park pool but i had heard much about it as a venue. the crowd actually stands in an abandoned pool, and the stage, which was fucking gigantic and way too high up, is at the "deep end". i was pretty hungry before the show but all they were selling to eat was corn on the cob. since when is that something to eat at a show? who knows, but it made for much hilarity watching ridiculous looking williamsburgers gnawing on their cobs.
back to the actual show. So as we heard the first notes of Teenage Riot we lit up our special magic cigarette and from there till the end of Trilogy with Elimnation Jr. it was all a swirling blur of joy. They played 4 encores, consisting of like 6 Rather Ripped songs, which were all solid, although i've seen them perform that entire album twice already. This show was so insane i only managed to take 3 pictures, and if you take a look at them you might understand the situation:







I Recorded both of these show on tape. williamsburgers in the crowd of sonic youth hassled me for being a music pirate and not having any right to record the show, to which i say why don't you go back to your hip rundown apartment and download 876 more albums from some blogs, and then check pitchfork to see what they gave the new Sufjan Stevens album or some shit to see if you should like it or not. i will attempt to post these show on here sometime in the future:
